Description (Original)
NotebookLM just added a brand new feature called short video overviews, or as they said: doom scrolling, but make it educational. It lets you generate vertical short form video content from your notebooks with a click. They include captions, animations, motion graphics, and images generated using Nano Banana 2 Lite. It is a very fun feature and I think is very useful for quick videos to recap something you've been learning or to share with a friend.

Feature Overview
NotebookLM launched "Short Video Overviews" — generates ~60-second vertical short-form explainer videos from notebook sources with one click. Initially announced for paid plans, rolled out to free plan within hours. Powered by Nano Banana 2 Lite (faster, cost-efficient image model, generates images in ~4 seconds).
How to Use
- Go to Studio panel in NotebookLM
- Click "Video Overview"
- Paid plans: three options (Cinematic, Explainer, Short)
- Free plans: two options (Explainer, Short)
- Select focus topic (auto-generated options or custom)
- Click Generate
- Generation takes ~10-20 minutes; multiple can run simultaneously across notebooks
Output Characteristics
- Duration: ~1 to 1.5 minutes
- Format: Vertical (mobile-optimized)
- Content: Narrated slideshows with AI-generated images, motion graphics, animations, text overlays for silent viewing
- Quality: Feels like someone actually made the motion graphics; better narration than typical AI voices
- Examples shown: Earthquakes (San Andreas Fault), Rarámuri tribe (Born to Run), Economic bubbles (UK Railway Mania → AI bubble), Jevons Paradox, Fantasia (brain visualization), 3D animation evolution (lamp squash/stretch)
Limitations / Problems
- 10-20 min generation time
- Limited control over style/voice/length
- Some factual accuracy issues in generated content
- Currently English only
